What is GIPA (FOI)?

You might ask "What is GIPA?". The Government Information (Public Access) (GIPA) Act (previously the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act) and known in other states and territories as Access to Government Information, Right to Know or similar titles, gives individuals and organisations the legal right to:

- Obtain documents/information held by government agencies
- Appeal against decisions not to grant access to documents/information

It also places significant additional responsibilities on agencies to: publish information required by legislation; proactively publish additional information not previously available; consider making information available through informal processes; and make information available unless there is an overriding public interest against its release
