Minister Maude would have it that so much information would be available to the general public, FOI would become unnecessary.
However, Minister Maude also revealed the reluctance of some public sector bodies to meet their open data obligations. The reality is that government of all jurisdictions - local state or federal and both political persuasions do not like to be caught out. It’s fine to have the other side embarrassed, but they do not want their own mistakes to become a matter of public record.
For some reason whilst everyone is prepared to agree that we are all human and, as such can make mistakes, politicians get very uncomfortable when their mistakes may become public.
It’s an indictment on us and the type of people we elect to represent us, that they feel they cannot be seen to be human with human failings.
